Olivia Hussey, Leonard Whiting sue Paramount for child abuse over nude scene in 1968's Romeo and Juliet

Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting were seen in 1968’s Romeo and Juliet, which was directed by Franco Zeffirelli. The film was nominated for four Academy Awards. However, a particular bedroom room with nude scenes of the lead actors’ stirred controversy. Now, years later, the actors have filed a lawsuit in court accusing the production house, Paramount, of child abuse.

WHAT DOES THE LAWSUIT SAY?

As per the lawsuit, the actors have claimed that the director Franco, who passed away in 2019, had assured them that there would be no nudity in the film. However, they allege that the director asked them to perform in the nude with body makeup, claiming that the film would fail if not done this way. Hussey was 15 and Whiting was 16 at the time of filing. The actors now claim that they were shot nude without their knowledge.

‘THERE WAS NO ME TOO’

“What they were told and what went on were two different things,” said Tony Marinozzi, who is a business manager for both actors. “They trusted Franco. At 16, as actors, they took his lead so that he would not violate that trust they had. Franco was their friend, and frankly, at 16, what do they do? There are no options. There was no #MeToo.”

The complaint also alleged that the actors have suffered mental distress since the film’s release. The duo is seeking damages to be more than $500 million.
